Reimagining what “church” can be….

The Catholic Church in Exile is an Independent Catholic Jurisdiction with traditional ties to the Old Catholic Church in Utrecht. Rooted in the teachings and theology of the ancient church, we continue to remain open to the dynamic movement of the Holy Spirit who makes fresh and relevant the Word of God from age to age. With the traditional teachings of Catholicism as our foundation and listening always the whispering love of the Holy Spirit, we spread the Good News of a transformative Catholicism that is Sacramental, Apostolic, Liturgical, Incarnational—a Catholicism without judgment. We are a church that excludes no one from the Sacraments, regardless of age, physical ability, gender identity, sexual orientation, or marital status.

Jesus taught a radical message of non-judgment and forgiveness. In fact, so adamant was Jesus that we condemn no one that he said to do so was to ensure that we, ourselves, were condemned in the same manner. (Matthew 7:1-5). Jesus warned us to care about others with a terrifying clarity, stating plainly that even Christians who do not treat others as beloved of God will be condemned by that same God. (Matthew 25:31-46) These are radical teachings that the CCE in Kenya embraces, especially in our ministry to the LGBTQIA community which is largely exiled from Christian churches throughout Africa and the world.

Jesus himself healed those who were excluded from worshipping in the Temple because of physical conditions excluded by the Mosaic law: skin conditions, blindness, menstrual issues, physical disability, muteness, deafness. As these infirmities were healed, Jesus often sent the person straight to the priest so they could enter Temple worship again.

We, too, see salvation in its original Greek meaning: “healing”. Our divisions—between us and God, between ourselves and others, and even within our own heart—are healed by the blood of the cross which brought together heaven and earth, human and divine. Sin is division and division is sin. Jesus removed our sins and so, as one Body in Christ, we are not separated, but are as close as the head is to the body. As Paul said, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28)

When we accuse others of sin, we become sa’tans. The word “Satan” in Hebrew means “accuser.” It was the job of the devil to accuse human beings of sin (see Job 1:1-12 and Job 2:1-12). We are meant to be other christs (Galatians 2:19-21; 2 Corinthians 12:9; 1 Corinthians 11:1). When we take on the role of the Sat’an, the accuser, we become Antichrists. When we plead the cross and accept salvation as the healing of our hatred, we join the angels in casting out accusation and judgment (Revelation 12).

If you want to be a part of this movement of unity, love, and the incarnational divinity—in—creation that God revealed in Christ, join us.

If you have been exiled from God because of the judgment of people, join us.

If you feel called to heal the world as Jesus healed the world by serving all people as one, join us.

If you are weary of the messages of hate and division, join us.
